About Hypnotherapy

What is Hypnosis / trance?

If you imagine consciousness as a staircase then at the top of the stairs is being wide awake, down at the bottom is fast asleep and about halfway down is the state of hypnosis.

Hypnosis. Trance. Mesmerism. Few people understand what hypnotic trance really means or how it works. But you can be one of the few!

To experience hypnosis, you certainly don’t have to understand it – just as flowers don’t need to know the inner workings of photosynthesis in order to grow.

But once you come to know how trance works and the role it plays in producing emotional problems (which is why we also use it to help overcome them), you will start to understand yourself and other people so much better. Hypnosis happens whether you understand it or not.

What is Hypnosis / trance?

Have you ever ‘zoned out’ while driving? Your unconscious competence enables you to drive safely even while another part of your mind daydreams. You might arrive at your destination with barely any conscious memory of the journey you just took!

What about becoming deeply engrossed in a movie or a book? Two hours can fly by without you noticing. Try doing the same thing standing in the rain waiting for a bus! Your brain is clearly operating differently with respect to memory and time in these two situations.

What is Hypnotherapy?

Hypnotherapy involves you being guided into a hypnotic / trance state and then using various Psychotherapy techniques to work with your subconscious mind.

Being in a hypnotic / trance state means that we can work communicate directly with your sub-conscious mind and minimise interference from your conscious mind.  The sub-conscious mind is where all your memories, behaviours, habits and motivations are stored.

When communicating directly with your subconscious mind, we can use various psychotherapy and NLP techniques to understand causes and establish new constructive patterns of behaviour to achieve your goals and objectives.

When in hypnosis your focus becomes focused on being very relaxed both mentally and physically. You will be able to hear everything that is said when you are in hypnosis, you are always in control and you cannot be forced to do anything against your own will.

What is NLP?

Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP) examines the cogs inside the machine that is the human mind; it helps us understand what drives human behaviour. It focuses on how our thoughts, actions, emotions, and numerous other individual characteristics work together to affect how we conduct ourselves.

The developers of NLP – Richard Bandler and Dr John Grinder – searched for the essence of behavioural change; they were determined to understand the hidden grammar of thinking and human conduct and this led to the development of NLP.

Hypnotherapy and NLP can be used to change the ways we habitually behave and literally reprogram our minds.

Famous practitioners of NLP include the likes of Tony Robbins and Paul McKenna.
